Well
I definitely did not see this coming. The KC Royals have signed Gil Meche. The Royals. They actually won something. Sure, it was just a bidding war, and I'm not really positive that it was much of a bidding war, but they did get him.
This has its good and bad points.
First, the good. This means the Cubs have to look elsewhere for starting pitching. And I don't mean to the free agent market. I'm talking trades here. Let's get Penny from the Dodgers, or let's get Jake Westbrook from the Indians. With either one of these guys, the Cubs rotation improves. I think Meche was at best a 3 in the rotation, but I think at best that's probably what Lilly is. We need a solid 2, and I think Penny or Westbrook could be that 2. A quick check of stats shows that Penny had 16 wins last year, and a 4.33 ERA. He did have 55 walks, but that's still 60(!) fewer than Zambrano. Yikes. I had no idea Z had that many walks. I'm gonna a need a second to gather my thoughts...
Ok, I'm back. Anyways, looking at Mark Hendrickson, whom the Cubs could also get, shows that he was 2-7 in 12 starts with an ERA of 4.68. Not terrible, but you don't want to give up too much to get someone like that. Right now we've got 2 lefties in teh rotation. Hendrickson would give us a third. I don't think we need a third unless he comes from the Indians.
Ok, now for the bad signs of this move. This could mean that Hendry will move on to the next pitcher on his wishlist, and that that pitcher will be shitty Jason Marquis. I really don't want that piece of trash on our team, unless he starts the season in AAA working on mechanics.
So that was a surprise. Hopefully it won't come back to bite us in the ass, but I wouldn't have wanted to give Meche the contract that he got. Doesn't he realize that pitchers go to KC to die? Exhibit A: Scott Elarton. He was miserable in KC last year. That's the only exhibit I have, but it's all I need.
Anyways, hopefully we're not done dealing, but with Hendry in the hospital, I don't know how much more will happen. Here's to hoping the Cardinals fail at getting every player they want.
