Today's Cubs post

Last night the Cubs added yet another free agent to the growing roster of players they've stolen from other teams when they signed Ted Lilly to a 4 year, $40 million deal.

Jason Schmidt was also signed yesterday, by the Dodgers, and now the Cubs are basically going after Gil Meche. The Cubs are on the top of his list, so basically it seems like if the Cubs make any sort of decent bid, they should be able to get him.

Here's my problem. As I mentioned yesterday, there are a number of teams out there that have too much pitching. Seriously, that's their problem. You look at the Phillies, Dodgers, White Sox, and they've got too many starting pitchers. The Phillies actually acquired the problem yesterday, when they traded for Freddy Garcia from the Sox. So now they're looking to clear out a pitcher (rumor is it's Jon Lieber) and get an outfielder. But, I have a problem with the Cubs going out to sign every available free agent, because it could turn out to really backfire. Of course, Hendry doesn't care, as he probably won't be around long enough for it to backfire anyways. I just hope that the Cubs, in addition to free agents, are keeping options for trades open too.

Anyways, as mentioned, the Dodgers are also on the list for having too many pitchers. They've added two, and pitching was a pretty strong point for the last year (the lost Maddux) but they still have a surplus. This leads to rumors that the Dodgers are going to deal one (possibly two) starters. Either a high end starter like Brad Penny, or a lower end pitcher, like Mark Hendrickson. I think it would be great if the Cubs could get somebody like Penny, because he's a power pitcher who also manages to eat innings (which neither Meche nor Lilly have done terribly effectively) and he's better, in my opinion, than both Meche and Lilly. However, I think most people expect the Dodgers to get rid of Hendrickson, and the Cubs are a definite possibility.

Originally, the Dodgers were short an outfielder. However, last night (or this morning or something) they added Luis Gonzalez. So, scratch trading Jacque Jones to them. The outfield for the Dodgers is going to be weak, so they may consider Jones, but I doubt it with two lefties already out there.

So, no news on the Jacque Jones trade today. However, there is news that the Cubs are one of about 5 teams still interested in trading for Ryan Church. Apparently, should we get him, he would be a center fielder. I don't know if if I'm entirely happy about this, since he was written off in Washington for a reason (which I don't know what it was). Lofton would probably be a better choice, in my opinion, but hey, he could surprise me.

Still, the Cubs are looking at getting Cliff Floyd. They requested his medical records yesterday apparently. This sucks. MATT MURTON DOESN'T NEED A PLATOON. I don't know why we can't let him play his damn position without second guessing every second of it. Also, CLIFF FLOYD IS NOT BETTER THAN MURTON. Why do we need a corner outfielder to hit .270 with 30 homers (it's definitely not guaranteed Floyd gives you that, and if he did, I would bet it was a fluke) when we've got a guy who can hit 20 homers with a .300 average? We don't, that's why. So quit trying to platoon Murton! Now, if it were Jacque Jones playing everyday and we wanted to get someone good to hit lefties, I would understand, but that isn't the situation, so I hope the Cubs aren't stupid about this.

Finally, one bit of bittersweet news, the Cubs traded Freddy Bynum. I absolutely hated Bynum, but it wasn't really his fault. Baker started him at 2nd, where he wasn't good, or experienced, and also hit him in terrible spots in the order. So it's good we got rid of him, because he would be stealing time away from Theriot or Cedeno (one of whome should start instead of Izturis, unless we're, you know, trying to lose). It's too bad that he has to be this hated though.

Nah, it's not too bad, good riddance.
