Uh, what? (college basketball edition)
So, I'm slightly behind in my college basketball coverage. And by coverage I mean in my following of college basketball. I mean, Midnight Madness was just, what, 2, 3 weeks ago? So, I noticed that the Coaches Poll is out today, and I disagree with a number of things.
Judging from the USAToday/ESPN Coaches Poll, the coaches are absolutely crazy. Come on, 2 Big 10 teams in the top 25? Yet you've got Tennessee (fuck Bruce Pearl), Creighton, Kentucky, Nevada, Washington, Georgia Tech all there? And the 2 Big 10 teams you have are in the top 10? Uh, I get Ohio State because Thad Matta is a fucking illegal recruiter. And that Oden kid. He's kind of a big deal. But, uh, Wisconsin? Seriously??
So, obviously the coaches are out of their fucking minds. Now, I'm a big fan of the Illini, I don't hide it. And I'm all for giving these mid-majors respect when it comes time for the NCAA tournament to begin. But, uh, it's the fucking first week. Excuse me, it's before exhibition games start! This is also the time when you'll find someone like, oh, I don't know, Dayton, come away with, oh, I don't know, two wins in the Maui tournament, and the next week they'll be ranked 16. And then they lose 8 in a row. Including a nail-biter to Bowling Green. Now I'm not knocking Dayton, or Bowling Green, but maybe a little more thought should go into these pre-season polls, because you know that even some of the top 10 teams are going to drop out of the top 25 by the end of the season. The only thing I agree with? Florida is number 1.
And Tennessee?? They barely made it out of the first round of the NCAA tournament! Do you expect them to come back stronger and better? Especially with Bruce Pearl as their coach? And Nevada? Unless they're in some great pre-season tournaments, they don't even face competition enough to judge whether or not they belong in the Top 25. Again, this is not a knock on Nevada, as they probably deserve to be in the Top 25. But if they keep winning, as they most likely will do (I haven't looked at their schedule, nor will I) they rise in the rankings. So, are you gonna put them in the top 10 if they win that much? Because they DO NOT deserve to be there. (Feel free to prove me wrong.)
No, the only team I'm knocking in the Top 25 is Tennessee. But you've got Kentucky, who could barely win anything last year (seriously, they were horrible) who lost Rajon Rondo and they supposedly are supposed to be better this year? And Washington! They lost Brandon Roy, perhaps the most dominant player in the NCAA outside of Adam Morrison, but they're there?? (Note how I left out J.J. Redick in that statement.)
So Illinois lost James Augustine and Dee Brown. So I can see why they're not ranked. But seriously, Creighton?? You might as well put Marquette in there. THEY DID???!!!!
I just can't believe that the Big 10 is getting no respect this year outside of Wisconsin (WHO DO THEY HAVE??) and Ohio State (or Oden's team). But, I guess, who is going to be above the Illini? Definitely not Iowa, definitely not Michigan, definitely not most of the other schools, except for maybe a Michigan State. But I predict 4 Big 10 teams finish the season in the top 20.
I also predict that Kelvin Sampson gets hit for no fewer than 4 more recruiting violations.
